Abstract

Oxytocin and arginine vasopressin are critical neuropeptides in regulating various social behaviors and physiological processes. Growing research on their neuroendocrine roles has revealed complex and varied functions, ranging from the modulation of reproduction to stress response. The objective of this study was to describe the neuroendocrine function of the nanopedtides oxytocin and arginine vasopressin through a literature review. An exhaustive search was conducted in PubMed for articles published between 2019 and 2024, identifying seven key studies. The results indicated that these neuropeptides influence essential social behaviors and the physiology of mammals and invertebrates. Studies on poison frogs and field mice highlighted the influence of ecological and environmental factors on the variability of social behavior. Additionally, intranasal administration of oxytocin showed significant heterogeneity in its effects, emphasizing the need for improved methodologies and replicability of studies. Research on invertebrates revealed the conserved evolution of these neuropeptides, playing roles in the regulation of reproduction, feeding, and homeostasis. In conclusion, oxytocin and arginine vasopressin play crucial neuroendocrine roles in modulating behaviors and physiological processes, with a conserved evolution from invertebrates to mammals. The variability in results underscores the importance of rigorous experimental approaches and consideration of environmental context and phenotypic plasticity in future research to develop therapeutic applications based on a precise understanding of these neuroendocrine systems.
