Abstract

Introduction: Elevated blood pressure is a relevant health problem worldwide.

Objective: The objective was to evaluate the effects of pharmacological therapy on blood pressure reduction in students of Ecuador.

Methods: This study was framed within a prospective, experimental, analytical and longitudinal taxonomy. The pharmacological therapy applied to the students was based on the administration of specific antihypertensive drugs. The study population consisted of 114 university students from Ecuador, diagnosed with arterial hypertension. The pertinent statistical analyses were performed using the Wilcoxon test, after verifying the normality of the data with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

Results: The results showed that, on average, blood pressure before therapy was 119.91 mmHg, while after therapy it decreased significantly to 100.79 mmHg. The mean difference in blood pressure was 19.12 mmHg, indicating a significant reduction in blood pressure. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test yielded a Z-statistic of -9.358, with a bilateral asymptotic significance of less than 0.001, which. indicated a highly significant difference in blood pressure.

Conclusions: This study provided strong evidence that pharmacological therapy applied to students was effective in reducing blood pressure. The study provides a solid basis for future research and supports the relevance of implementing pharmacological therapies as part of cardiovascular health programs in academic settings.
