Abstract

Academic training in obstetrics is crucial to ensuring adequate maternal and neonatal health care, areas that require highly skilled personnel. The aim of this study was to justify the need to create and strengthen the academic offer in obstetrics at UNIANDES. To this end, a descriptive analysis was conducted based on maternal and neonatal health data in the region, reviewing the existing academic offer at similar institutions, and surveying health professionals and students. The results showed a notable demand for obstetrics specialists and an insufficiency of specialized academic programs in this area, which negatively affects the quality of obstetric care. The surveys revealed a high interest among students in obstetrics programs, and health professionals widely supported the need for these programs. The review of the academic offer at other institutions highlighted the lack of programs dedicated exclusively to obstetrics, underscoring an opportunity for UNIANDES to lead in this area. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate the urgent need to create and strengthen the academic offer in obstetrics at UNIANDES, which will not only improve the training of specialized professionals but also have a positive impact on the quality of maternal and neonatal care in the region, thus contributing to the community's well-being and the advancement of specialized medical education.
