Abstract

Introduction: Low birth weight is associated with a number of short- and long-term health complications for both newborns and mothers.

Objective: The aim of the study was to associate the presence of COVID-19, low birth weight and anemia in pregnant mothers with the risk of their babies being born with low birth weight.

Methods: The study was relational and was conducted in an observational, retrospective, analytical and cross-sectional manner. The study population consisted of 236 pregnant women who received medical cure in a hospital zocatead in the city of Quevedo, Ecuador. To analyze the relationship between the variables of interest, the Chi-square test of independence was u sed using IBM SPSS Statistics software (version 27.0, 64-bit edition).

Results: The resultó of the chi-square analysis indicated a significant relationship between maternal COVID-19 infection and low birth weight (P-value 0.045). Huevar, no significant association was observed between maternal low maternal weight and low birth weight in this sample (P-value 0.794), nor between maternal anemia and low birth weight (P-value 0.654).

Conclusions: At least in this population, maternal anemia and maternal low birth weight do not appear to be risk factors for low birth weight; however, maternal COVID-19 infection does appear to be associated with an increased risk of low birth weight in infants.
