Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases represent one of the main sources of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Objective: The objective was to relate smoking, family history and sex with cardiovascular disease in older adults in a hospital in Ecuador.

Methods: This was a relational, cross-sectional, observational, analytical and retrospective study. A total of 111 older adults from a hospital were studied. The Phi coefficient was applied using SPSS version 27 software. The researcher's hypothesis proposed that there was a significant association between smoking, family history and sex with the presence of cardiovascular disease in this population.

Results: Of the total number of older adults, 55 (49.5 %) had cardiovascular disease. On evaluating the association between variables, it was found that 56 (50.5 %) were men and 55 (49.5 %) were women; 57 (51.4 %) had a family history of these diseases and 58 (52.3 %) were smokers. However, statistical analysis using the Phi coefficient showed that there were no significant associations between sex (p=0.155), family history (p=0.926) or smoking (p=0.298) with the presence of cardiovascular disease in this population.

Conclusions: With a confidence level of 95 %, the null hypothesis is not rejected and we conclude that there is insufficient evidence in the data to state that there is a significant association between smoking, family history, or sex with the presence of cardiovascular disease in the sample of older adults studied.
