Abstract

Introduction: Hypertrophy refers to the abnormal increase in the size of an organ or tissue due to cellular growth.

Objective: To compare the degree of thyroid hypertrophy affectation according to sex in patients from a clinic in Ecuador.

Methods: The study was analytical, observational, retrospective and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 84 patients (43 males and 41 females) from a clinic. The U-Mann-Whitney test was used with SPSS software.

Results: Thyroid hypertrophy grade 0 had an equal prevalence in both sexes (16.7 %). In grade 1 there was a slightly higher prevalence in men (33.3 % vs. 23.8 %). In grades 2 and 3 the prevalence was similar. In grade 4, a higher prevalence was observed in women than in men (21.4 % vs 9.5 %). The average rank in women (45.49) was higher than in men (39.51). Likewise, the sum of ranges was greater in the group of women (1910.50) than in the group of men (1659.50). The Mann-Whitney U value obtained was 756.500 and the Z value was -1.153. The p value or bilateral asymptotic significance was 0.249.

Conclusions: It is concluded that there are no statistically significant differences in the degrees of thyroid hypertrophy between males and females in this sample of patients. Consequently, with a confidence level of 95 %, the results indicate that the degree of thyroid hypertrophy is comparable between both sexes in the study population.
