Abstract

Introduction: Anxiety and attention concentration are factors that can affect the academic performance of university students; Therefore, it is useful to establish specific strategies to control, reduce and prevent psychosocial factors that contribute negatively to academic performance.

Objective: to assess the recreational volleyball effects on anxiety and attention concentration of university students.

Methods: Experimental research with two independent homogeneous groups (Group 1: Experimental; Group 2: Control) controlling levels of anxiety and attention concentration at two moments of the intervention process, where a recreational volleyball program is applied to the experimental group during an academic semester.

Results: Once the intervention process was completed, there were no intergroup improvements in the control group, both in anxiety (p=0.912) and in attention concentration (p=0.833), being significantly different in favor of the experimental group (Anxiety and Concentration; p=0.000) that did show notable improvements. The comparison between independent groups showed significant differences in favor of the post-test for the experimental group, both in anxiety and in attention concentration (p=0.000).

Conclusions: The use of a recreational volleyball program can favor recovery processes in anxiety and attention concentration in university students, having indirect influences on academic performance that should be assessed in new studies.
