Abstract

Introduction: Thyroid storm is an acute and potentially life-threatening complication of thyroid disease, characterized by an excessive overproduction of thyroid hormones.
Objective: To characterize thyroid storm through the results obtained in a case study of an Ecuadorian patient.
Methods: The research had a descriptive epidemiological design and consisted of the development of a clinical case of thyroid storm in which the unit of study was a 17-year-old Ecuadorian patient.
Results: It was found that initially the health professionals in the critical emergency area, according to the symptoms reported by the patient and the investigation they carried out, made a diagnosis of community pneumonia, acute tonsillitis, acute respiratory failure and supraventricular tachycardia, pointing out a possible anomaly in the respiratory system, overlooking the personal pathological history of hyperthyroidism for which the patient had been suffering for about a year.
Conclusions: It was concluded that thyroid storm is a life-threatening complication of thyroid disease, characterized by an excessive overproduction of thyroid hormones. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to improve outcomes in patients affected by this condition. Scientific studies in recent years have contributed significantly to the knowledge and understanding of the concept of the thyroid gland.
