Abstract

Introduction: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can seriously affect a person's sexual and reproductive health.
Objective: To characterize the level of knowledge and behaviors related to STIs in adolescents of Health Center 1 in Tulcán, Ecuador.
Methods: This was a descriptive, observational, prospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of 49 adolescents who attended Health Center 1 in Tulcán, Ecuador, to whom a survey of seven closed questions was applied.
Results: 16% of the women surveyed stated that they had not received information about STIs, which represents a risk for the prevention of STIs. 18% considered that STIs did not represent a risk. Eighteen percent considered that STIs could not be transmitted in the case of unprotected sex. Only half of them answered correctly about knowledge of STIs and mortality.  16% reported having initiated their sexual life between the ages of 10 and 14 years. Eighty-two percent reported not having used any type of protection during their first sexual intercourse. Six percent reported having had more than 10 sexual partners. The disease with the highest prevalence was genital herpes simplex.
Conclusions: There was evidence of low knowledge and inadequate behavior regarding STI risks. Therefore, the development of educational strategies focused on education, promotion, and prevention of STIs in this study population is required.
