Abstract

Introduction: Trigeminal neuralgia is a neurological disorder that causes episodes of severe, sharp pain in the face.
Objective: Conduct an analysis on trigeminal neuralgia.
Method: The search was carried out in the SCOPUS and WEBSCIENCE databases, in articles published between 2017 and 2023, written in English, French, German, Portuguese or Spanish.
Results: It was evidenced that trigeminal neuralgia is a neuropathic disorder that affects a tiny part of the world population. It is characterized by intense and recurrent pain in the trigeminal area, showing that it is an important neuropathic disorder that affects a significant proportion of the world's population. Likewise, evidence was obtained to affirm that health professionals should be trained to adequately diagnose and treat this condition, using a combination of pharmacological and surgical approaches as appropriate.
Conclusions: The authors conclude that there is sufficient evidence to state that, trigeminal neuralgia is a complex neurological disease that requires continued research to improve its diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, further studies are needed to better understand the pathogenesis of the disease and to develop new and more effective treatment options, some of which are recommended through the interpretation made here.
