Abstract

This study addresses the relationship between preeclampsia during pregnancy and the risk of developing chronic hypertension in the postpartum period, considering key risk factors such as a history of preeclampsia, obesity, advanced maternal age, family history of hypertension, and gestational diabetes. The objective of the study was to interpret, through a literature review, the association between preeclampsia and the risk of chronic hypertension in postpartum women. Analyses were conducted based on observational studies, evaluating multiple variables and their impact on the cardiovascular health of affected women. The results revealed a strong association between a history of preeclampsia and a significantly higher risk of developing chronic hypertension after childbirth. Additionally, increased risks were identified in women who were overweight or obese, older, had a family history of hypertension, and those who had experienced gestational diabetes. However, it is highlighted that the quality of the available scientific evidence is limited, underscoring the need for further research to strengthen and confirm these conclusions. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of rigorous follow-up and care for women with a history of preeclampsia, establishing an important foundation for future research aimed at effectively preventing and managing chronic hypertension in this vulnerable population.
