Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease distinguished by high blood glucose levels.

Objective: To identify epidemiological factors associated with the hospital stay of diabetic patients in a hospital in Ecuador, during the year 2022.

Methods: Observational, analytical, retrospective and cross-sectional study. Spearman's Rho was used to relate age with several categorical variables.

Results: Age presented a range of 72 years, with a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 90 years. The mean age was 54.14 years (SD= 21.132). The variables studied showed these results: Sex (51.2 % male and 48.8 %); Physical activity (50.9 % non-sedentary and 49.1 % sedentary); BMI (29.7 % normal weight, 36.1 % overweight, 34.2 % obese); Smoking (50.4 % smokers and 49.6 % non-smokers); Alcoholism (49.6 % with a history of alcoholism); Illicit drugs (52.5 % with a history of consumption); Dyslipidemia (54.4 % of diabetic patients had no history of consumption). 4 % of diabetic patients did not present dyslipidemia); Bronchial Asthma (45. 4 % of diabetic patients did not have bronchial asthma); HT (49.1 % of diabetic patients did not have hypertension); Stroke (48.3 % of diabetic patients had no history); Heart Disease (50.4 % of diabetic patients did not have heart disease); Other Comorbidities (49.3 % of diabetic patients had no other comorbidities).

Conclusions: There was no significant association between age and the categorical variables studied, except for the weak but significant negative correlation with alcoholism.
