Abstract

Introduction: Both rhinitis and urticaria can be caused by allergic responses and it is of interest to analyse the possible association between these variables.

Objective: The objective of the study was to analyse the association between rhinitis and urticaria in children treated in a hospital in the Ecuador.

Methods: This was a case-control design, so it was a retrospective, cross-sectional, analytical, observational and retrospective study, which was framed at the relational research level. The association between having Rhinitis and having Urticaria was measured using Chi-square association tests and Odds ratios in a population of 72 children treated in an Ecuadorian hospital.

Results: Of the 72 children studied, 36 had rhinitis and 36 did not. The presence of urticaria was observed in 66.7% of the children with rhinitis and in 50 % of those without rhinitis. Statistical tests such as chi-square and likelihood ratio did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). The Odds ratio suggested that patients with Rhinitis were about twice as likely to have Urticaria, but the wide confidence interval, crossing the value 1, pointed to some uncertainty in this association.

Conclusions: The association between Rhinitis and Urticaria in children showed indications of a relationship, especially in those with Rhinitis, although further studies are needed to confirm and fully understand this connection.
