Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is a human pathogen that possesses a number of virulence factors and has the ability to develop resistance to most antibiotics.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) between the Intensive Care Unit and the general hospitalisation units of a hospital in Ecuador.

Methods: This was a relational study, which compared frequencies between the Intensive Care Unit and the general hospitalisation units of a hospital. It was classified as retrospective, cross-sectional, observational and analytical. The population under investigation comprised a total of 540 patients from a hospital. The Chi-square test of independence was used using SPSS version 25 software.

Results: 30.7 % of the hospitalised patients manifested MRSA. In the Intensive Care Unit, 59 cases (10.9 %) were observed, while in the general hospitalisation units, 107 cases (19.8 %) were observed. Statistical evidence derived from chi-square tests indicated that there was a notable difference in MRSA prevalence between the hospitalisation areas studied (p < 0.001 in all tests).

Conclusions: The hypothesis that there was a difference in MRSA prevalence between the Intensive Care Unit and general inpatient units was robustly confirmed and supported by the statistical tests performed in the study.
