Abstract

Introduction: Leishmaniasis is an infection caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania, which consists of several species, subspecies or strains that are pathogenic to humans.

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological surveillance of Leishmaniasis and its possible causes in Ecuador.

Methods: The study corresponded to the exploratory research level, and the authors relied on hermeneutics for the interpretation of the systematic review carried out with the PRISMA 2020 methodology on the epidemiological surveillance of Leishmaniasis and its possible causes in Ecuador. It was an observational and retrospective research. Finally, 50 articles were reviewed in the PubMed database.

Results: The publications reviewed were interpreted as providing knowledge on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, genetics, and socioeconomic factors related to Leishmaniasis in Ecuador. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the disease and may guide future research and control strategies. It was found that cutaneous Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by the bite of infected sandflies, and its geographical distribution is influenced by environmental, migratory and climatic factors. It is highlighted that there are differences in the delay in seeking medical care between regions, and barriers such as limited access to medical services and the stigma associated with the disease are identified.

Conclusions: It was concluded that Leishmaniasis is crucial due to its significant public health burden and socioeconomic impact on affected communities.
