Abstract

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for the treatment of pain and inflammation; however, their prolonged and inappropriate use can cause serious adverse effects, especially at the gastric level. Self-medication and the lack of information about their risks remain a public health issue. The aim of this study was to explore the community's level of knowledge about the gastric adverse effects associated with the use of NSAIDs and to promote awareness about the rational use of these drugs. A qualitative action-research study was conducted in the 9th of December Cooperative of Santo Domingo, based on surveys applied to the community and an educational intervention through informative talks. The results indicated that 68.3 % of respondents were unaware that the gastrointestinal tract is the organ most affected by the prolonged use of NSAIDs, while 38.3 % mistakenly identified diverticulitis as one of the main complications. Additionally, 41.7 % seemed to believe that reducing the use of these drugs is more relevant to avoid liver damage than gastrointestinal damage. The educational talks proved to be an effective strategy to improve knowledge and awareness about these drugs. It is concluded that it is necessary to strengthen education on the responsible use of NSAIDs, addressing not only their gastrointestinal effects but also their cardiovascular, renal, and environmental risks, in order to promote safer practices in the community.
