Abstract

Introduction: Heart disease represents the leading causes of illness and death on a global scale, and the use of the Framingham Scale is essential to anticipate the risk associated with these cardiovascular conditions.

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the 10-year cardiovascular risk in adult patients with a diagnosis of arterial hypertension who attended a hospital in Ecuador, in 2022, using the Framingham scale.

Methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study. We included 105 patients with a diagnosis of arterial hypertension. Global risk was classified using the Framingham Risk Score 2008. Data were processed with SPSS version 27 statistical software.

Results: 49.5 % were men and 50.5 % were women; 53.3 % had type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; 41.9 % had a history of smoking; 21.9 % had elevated stage 3 systolic blood pressure; 35.2 % had hypercholesterolemia; 41.0 % had high Global Cardiovascular Risk and 22.8 % had an intermediate Global Cardiovascular Risk.

Conclusions: The use of the Framingham Risk Score was shown to be a valuable tool for assessing overall cardiovascular risk in primary care of the patients examined. Further application of this scale in health care facilities is suggested to improve the identification and more accurate estimation of cardiovascular disease. This would allow more effective preventive and care strategies to be implemented, which in the long term will contribute to improving the health prognosis and quality of life of patients.
