Abstract

Introduction: Understanding the relationship between maternal age, gestational age and newborn weight is crucial for maternal and child health.

Objective: To relate maternal age and gestational age with newborn weight in pregnant women attended in a hospital in the city of Ambato, Ecuador.

Methods: The research corresponded to the relational level and was classified as an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional and analytical study. The study population comprised 144 pregnant patients who received medical care in a hospital located in the city of Ambato, Ecuador, during the year 2022. It was planned to use Pearson's correlation test, but since the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test could not demonstrate the normality of the data, Spearman's Rho test was used.

Results: The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test suggested that Maternal Age and Gestational Time (p-value <0.001 in both cases) do not follow a normal distribution in the sample studied. A weak significant correlation was observed between Newborn Weight and Gestation Time (correlation coefficient = 0.219, p = 0.008) as well as between Newborn Weight and Maternal Age (correlation coefficient = 0.232, p = 0.005), both significant at 0.01 confidence level (bilateral).

Conclusions: The results of the study evidence that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected, so there is correlation between the associated variables (Gestation time, Maternal age) and the monitoring variable (newborn weight).
