Abstract

Introduction: Erectile dysfunction requires further studies analysing its risk factors.

Objective: To associate diabetes, arterial hypertension, alcohol consumption and smoking with erectile dysfunction.

Methods: The study was relational, retrospective, observational, cross-sectional, and analytical. The study population included 385 patients who were treated in a hospital the Ecuador. To analyse the relationship between the variables, the Chi-square test of independence was applied using SPSS software (v. 27 64-bit edition).

Results: In relation to smoking, 49.4% of the patients were smokers, and its association with erectile dysfunction showed a chi-square of 0.029 with a bilateral significance of 0.865. Alcohol was consumed by 57.1 %, with a significant association with erectile dysfunction (chi-square = 15.612, p < 0.001). Hypertension affected 46.5 % of patients, with a non-significant association with erectile dysfunction (chi-squared = 1.183, p = 0.277). In addition, 48.1 % of subjects had diabetes, showing a strong association with erectile dysfunction (chi-square = 38.899, p < 0.001).

Conclusions: For smoking and high blood pressure, the results do not provide sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis, whereas, for alcohol consumption and diabetes, the data support the idea of a significant association with the presence of erectile dysfunction, leading to reject the null hypothesis in those specific cases.
