Abstract

Introduction: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) triggers an adverse immunological response to cow's milk proteins.

Objective: The objective of the study was to analyse by multinomial regression the degree of severity of APLV, according to sex, low birth weight, and inter-gestational interval, in infants seen in a clinic in the city of Babahoyo, Ecuador, during the period 2020-2022.

Methods: The retrospective, observational, cross-sectional, analytical, retrospective and predictive study included 105 infants with VLBW seen between 2020 and 2022 at the Babahoyo clinic. A multinomial regression design with likelihood ratio tests was implemented.

Results: 58.1 % correct predictions were achieved overall. The final model, with variables such as intergeneric interval, sex and low birth weight, fitted significantly better than the initial model with only the intercept. The distribution of the degree of APLV showed predominance of moderate cases (52.4 %), followed by mild (43.8 %) and severe (3.8 %).

Conclusions: The multinomial regression model demonstrated moderate ability to explain variability in the data. Significant associations between inter-gestational interval, sex and low birth weight highlighted the importance of considering these factors in the assessment of ALMP in infants. Statistical analysis performed at a 5 % significance level provided results that supported the alternative hypothesis (H1). Areas of improvement for future research were identified.
