Abstract

Introduction. Blood components are considered essential medicines by the World Health Organization (WHO), requiring management based on principles of safety, quality, and rational use. Their classification as regulated biological therapeutic products demand rigorous oversight throughout the transfusion system. Objective. To evaluate compliance with the essential activities of the Provincial Blood Program in Camagüey during 2024, according to the WHO Guidelines on the Management of Blood and Blood Components as Essential Medicines. Methods. A documentary analysis was conducted using records, technical reports, and current regulations from the Provincial Blood Bank and hospital transfusion services. Results. The system met technical and logistical standards, including traceability, quarantine, adverse event reporting, and regulatory framework. However, gaps persisted in rational clinical use, as evidenced by a hemotherapy indicator of 254 transfusions per 1 000 hospital admissions, exceeding the recommended threshold. Conclusions. It is necessary to implement patient blood management programs, strengthen medical education in transfusion medicine, and activate pharmacotherapeutic committees as clinical oversight bodies.
