Abstract

Bruxism is a parafunctional activity characterized by the clenching or grinding of teeth, linked to psychological and physiopathological disorders. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated many stress factors, impacting the prevalence of bruxism. The objective of this study was to interpret, through a narrative literature review, bruxism and its consequences. An exhaustive search was conducted in PubMed for articles published between 2019 and 2024, limited to studies on humans. Seventy-nine articles addressing the association of bruxism with various factors and health conditions were reviewed and analyzed. The results indicate a strong association between bruxism and post-traumatic stress disorder, particularly awake bruxism. An increase in the prevalence of bruxism during the COVID-19 pandemic was also observed, with psychological factors such as anxiety and fear significantly influencing it. Furthermore, the study highlights the effectiveness of occlusal splints and the need to integrate cognitive-behavioral therapies in the treatment of bruxism. Online health information about bruxism is often beyond the understanding of the general public, emphasizing the need to improve the accessibility of this information. In conclusion, this study underscores the complexity of bruxism and the need for a multidisciplinary approach to its management, especially considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental and oral health. It is recommended to continue investigating the links between bruxism and neurophysiological and psychological factors to develop more effective treatment strategies.Bruxism; consequences; COVID-19; stress; multidisciplinary treatment
