Abstract

Flexible dentures within restorative dentistry are highlighted for offering innovative alternatives to traditional rigid prostheses, improving adaptability and comfort for the patient. The aim of the study was to analyze the use of flexible dentures in the oral cavity through a PRISMA 2020 literature review. The searches covered the period from 2015 to 2023, using terms such as "flexible dental prosthesis," "edentulous," "oral rehabilitation," and "advantages of dental prostheses" in databases such as Scielo, Elsevier, and PubMed. This study has identified that flexible dental prostheses provide significant aesthetic benefits and improved adaptability compared to conventional prostheses, although they present limitations in terms of mechanical strength and durability, as well as maintenance difficulties due to plaque retention and pigmentation problems. The main conclusion of the study is that, although flexible prostheses offer aesthetic and immediate comfort advantages, their use must be carefully considered and restricted due to their mechanical limitations and the potential negative impact on long-term oral health.
