Abstract

Introduction: Assessment of blood glucose levels in older adult patients is of great relevance due to its association with critical health conditions. Understanding possible differences in levels before and after insulin treatment is essential to improve medical care.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the averages of repeated blood glucose measurements in older adults of Ecuador, before and after insulin treatment.

Methods: The study population consisted of a total of 177 older adult patients attended in a hospital in Ecuador. It corresponded to the relational research level, and was classified as retrospective and analytical. The hypothesis was that glycemia after was different from glycemia before (H1). SPSS version 25 statistical software was used to develop the Student's t-test for related samples.

Results: The results revealed a significant difference in glucose levels, with a mean decrease of 38.72 mg/dL after treatment. The significance level (p-value) was less than 0.01, which confirmed the statistical significance of the results.

Conclusions: The applied hypothesis test showed that blood glucose after treatment was statistically different from blood glucose before treatment, supporting the alternative hypothesis (H1). These findings suggest that insulin treatment has a significant effect on reducing blood glucose levels in older adults.
