Abstract

Introduction: Bruxism is a temporomandibular joint disorder characterized by involuntary grinding and clenching of the teeth during sleep or daytime. It is a common health problem that can have serious consequences for a patient's oral and general health.
Objective: To conduct an analysis about bruxism.
Methods: The study corresponded to the exploratory level, relying on hermeneutics to interpret the literature review. It was observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective. The search was performed in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases, focusing on articles published in the period 2018-2023.
Results: It was found that there is no consensus on the classification of bruxism, and that its causes may include physical, psychological, and genetic factors. In addition, it was found that essentially, its consequences include dental wear, orofacial pain, sleep disorders and temporomandibular joint problems. It was also evidenced that the treatment of bruxism should be individualized, and may include measures such as muscle relaxation, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and the use of intraoral devices.
Conclusions: This study was important to better understand the negative effects of this disorder on patients' oral and general health, and to develop effective treatments to improve patients' quality of life.
