Abstract

Introduction: Posts are important in endodontic treatment because they can help maintain the structural integrity of the tooth, provide additional support for the dental restoration, and prolong the life of the treated tooth. In the dental office, the widest root canals are often encountered, so certain precautions should be taken to restore these teeth, especially if they are exposed to chewing force, as there is an increased risk of root fracture in most cases.
Objective: To analyze the use of pins in endodontic treatment.
Methods: The search criteria complied with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) guidelines.
Results: It was evidenced that the main functions of the pin include providing retention to the tooth modification; ensuring the durability of the partially damaged tooth; and adding rigidity to the endodontically treated tooth.
Conclusions: It is concluded that there is no clear evidence as to whether the use of prefabricated posts or cast posts is more desirable. In addition, it was evidenced that for a successful restoration it is fundamental to choose the right type of post, to eliminate as much tooth structure as possible and in the case of a post a good adhesion.
