Abstract

This study was dedicated to exploring the applications of hyaluronic acid as a biomaterial in the field of dentistry, in order to examine its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in a clinical setting. To achieve this, a systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted, following the PRISMA approach. Studies published between 2018 and 2023 were included, selected from prestigious databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to ensure that only the most relevant articles were considered. Among the most significant findings, hyaluronic acid demonstrated notable advanages in tissue regeneration, its biocompatibility, and its antimicrobial properties. These qualities proved fundamental to its effectiveness in treating various dental conditions, such as wound healing and periodontal tissue regeneration. However, some notable weaknesses were also identified, such as the high cost and variability in product quality, as well as mild adverse reactions in some cases. Encouraging opportunities were also seen for expanding its applications in emerging areas and for combining it with other therapies. It was suggested that future efforts should focus on product standardization, generating more long-term evidence, and investigating new applications within the field. This study established a foundation for future research and clinical applications, highlighting the need to overcome current limitations in order to fully exploit the benefits of hyaluronic acid.
