Abstract

Malnutrition is a significant health problem, often associated with psychological disorders that affect daily food intake, either by increasing or decreasing body weight inappropriately. This study aimed to analyze malnutrition due to psychological disorders in elderly adults of the Emeritus Association Santa Cruz Herrera, in Ecuador. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire specifically designed for the study, which included closed-ended questions and Likert scales to measure various dimensions: socioeconomic status, eating habits, emotional state, social support, and the frequency and type of physical activity performed. The results revealed that malnutrition is present in 75 % of the cases, with contributing factors such as inadequate diet, overweight, obesity, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, 51 % of the patients were found to have a significant deficit in adopting healthy eating practices, while 40 % demonstrated an adequate attitude towards self-care. In conclusion, the study confirms a relationship between malnutrition and psychological disorders in elderly adults, highlighting the need for nursing interventions aimed at improving both nutritional health and psychological well-being in this vulnerable population.
