Abstract

Childhood dental malocclusion is a condition that affects dental alignment and functionality, with significant implications for both oral and general health. Despite its prevalence, knowledge about its causes and prevention is limited in some communities. The objective of this study was to design a prevention strategy for childhood dental malocclusion in the children of the "Creciendo Felices" center in Ibarra, Ecuador, aimed at reducing the prevalence and risk of this condition through educational and practical interventions directed at the children and their parents or caregivers. A field study with a non-experimental design and a descriptive cross-sectional approach was conducted, in which 21 parents of children aged 1 to 3 years were surveyed to assess their knowledge about malocclusion and the associated risk factors. The results showed that 86% of the parents were not familiar with the term "malocclusion" and were unaware of the signs that could trigger it, with mouth breathing being the most prevalent factor (36 %). Based on these findings, a preventive strategy was designed that includes continuous education for parents, regular dental check-ups, and the promotion of healthy habits among the children. The implementation of this strategy seeks not only to reduce the incidence of malocclusion but also to increase the level of knowledge and awareness among parents, highlighting the importance of early intervention to prevent future complications and improve dental health in this pediatric population.
