Abstract

Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a gynecologic condition that significantly impacts quality of life, especially in postmenopausal women. With increasing life expectancy, the prevalence of POP is bound to increase, highlighting the urgent need for effective and safe management strategies.

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of surgical interventions versus conservative therapies in improving symptoms, quality of life, and recurrence rates in adult women with genital prolapse.

Methods: A comprehensive systematic review was conducted in the PubMed, Scielo, and Embase databases, covering a five-year period from January 2019 to December 2024. The included studies comprised systematic reviews, systematic reviews with meta-analyses, and observational studies, selected through rigorous inclusion criteria to ensure the relevance and quality of the evidence.

Results: A total of 38 studies were evaluated for this analysis. The findings detail significant differences and trends in the effectiveness of surgical interventions compared to conservative therapies, highlighting variations in symptoms, quality of life, and recurrence rates associated with each type of treatment.

Conclusions: Surgical interventions and conservative therapies show clear differences in terms of effectiveness, with important implications for clinical practice. The results of this review provide a basis for guiding treatment decisions and highlight critical areas for future research, facilitating a better understanding of therapeutic options for genital prolapse in adult women.
