Abstract

Down syndrome is an autosomal genetic disorder caused by the formation of an extra chromosome 21, resulting in human aneuploidy compatible with life. The objective was to analyze the prevalence of dental caries and periodontopathies in patients with Down syndrome. The methodology used was a systematic review based on the PRISMA guideline, with information search in databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Google Schoolar, between 2018 and 2023, through algorithms with keywords. Of a total of 2905 articles, 9 were chosen for the study, where periodontal diseases were analyzed from the pathogenic microorganisms that are precursors of diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, among the results, the prevalence of gingivitis in people with Down Syndrome was higher than in healthy individuals, genetic studies showed the link between periodontal disease and Down syndrome, regarding cavities, only one study showed that people with Down syndrome are more likely to develop them, The rest of the studies show low rates of caries and explain that it can develop for various reasons. It is concluded that people with Down syndrome have a greater risk of suffering from periodontal problems due to intellectual disability and lack of manual skills, what makes oral hygiene a challenge.
