Abstract

Dental caries is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, affecting people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. The aim of the study was to interpret, through a bibliographic review, the use of fluoridated milk for the prevention of dental caries. This study employed a systematic literature review to assess the efficacy of fluoridated milk in preventing dental caries in children. Previous studies were analyzed, including controlled trials and observational studies, focusing on the comparison of caries incidence rates between populations that consume and do not consume fluoridated milk. A combined approach of Mapping and Systematic Literature Review was used to identify and thoroughly analyze the existing evidence on the effectiveness of fluoridated milk in preventing dental caries. The results indicated that fluoridated milk can significantly reduce the incidence of caries in school-aged children. However, the evidence, predominantly of low quality, suggests that the specific benefits and long-term safety of this intervention still require further research to confirm these preliminary findings. The conclusion of the study underscores the need for more high-quality research to conclusively validate the positive effects of fluoridated milk on dental health. Additionally, it is crucial to explore potential side effects to ensure a balance between benefits and risks, thus promoting public health practices based on solid evidence.
