Abstract

Introduction: Hypothyroidism, a condition that arises due to insufficient thyroid function, can be categorized into several levels depending on its severity.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the severity of patients with hypothyroidism according to the geographic region of Ecuador.

Methods: The study was carried out during the month of April 2023 and was framed in an observational, analytical, cross-sectional and retrospective type of research. The Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance was used. The sample analyzed consisted of 150 patients, equally distributed in 50 individuals from each of the three regions of Ecuador that were the object of the study: Coast, Highlands and Amazon. It was hypothesized that there were differences in the severity of hypothyroidism among patients from the three geographical regions of Ecuador analyzed.

Results: It was observed that the Amazon region had the highest mean rank (94.48), followed by the Sierra (70.76) and the Coast (61.26). These findings indicated the existence of significant differences in the severity of hypothyroidism among the regions analyzed. The results showed a significant value of the Kruskal-Wallis test (H = 17.857, gl = 2, p < 0.001).

Conclusions: We conclude that there are statistically significant differences in the severity of hypothyroidism among the geographic regions of Ecuador studied. These findings highlight the importance of considering regional particularities when approaching the diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism in the Ecuadorian context.
