Abstract

Introduction: The protocol for dental care in patients with Down syndrome is of utmost importance to ensure effective and safe treatment, especially in procedures such as pulpectomy and pulpotomy.

Objective: The aim of the study was to interpret the protocol of dental care in patients with Down syndrome focused on pulpectomy and pulpotomy treatment.

Methods: This was exploratory research, aided by hermeneutics to interpret the bibliographic review carried out, being observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective. The search was carried out basically in the Pubmed, Scopus and Scielo databases, mainly in articles from the last five years.

Results: It was evidenced that it is necessary to elaborate the medical-dental clinical history, through a medical interconsultation, with specific strategies according to the systemic pathology, as well as to determine a prevention of bacterial endocarditis, with the purpose of preventing oral diseases, especially periodontal diseases, in order not to use therapies with anti-inflammatory drugs that damage the gastric mucosa.

Conclusion: It was concluded that dental professionals are unaware of the processes and strategies that allow them to provide adequate care to children with Down syndrome, for which reason there is no multidisciplinary treatment that involves parents, relatives or those who are in their care, so that they participate in oral hygiene from birth, to avoid and prevent any type of dental affections. Dentists should be trained and updated on this topic, which is of worldwide concern, however, there is a lack of interest in this vulnerable area of society.
