Abstract

Background: Oral lesions in older adults are of great importance due to their high prevalence and possible association with systemic diseases.
Objective:
To valorate oral lesions in older adults.
Method: The study belonged to the exploratory level and was aided by hermeneutics for the interpretation of the systematic review carried out through the PRISMA 2020 methodology. The search was formalized in SCOPUS and the Web of Science, with articles published from 2018 to 2023. A total of 65 articles met the defined criteria and were chosen to consummate the review.
Results: Oral lesion was found to be an umbrella term for a wide variety of abnormalities affecting the oral cavity, so regular evaluation of the oral mucosa is essential for early detection of lesions and prevention of possible complications. We found that some of the most common lesions include aphthous ulcers, oral lichen planus, leukoplakia, erythroplakia, and oral carcinoma; furthermore, oral lesions can have a variety of causes or risk factors, including mechanical, infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic factors.
Conclusions: It is concluded that oral lesions are a public health problem with a high prevalence in the general population, being particularly important in older adults. Therefore, it is important to make an accurate diagnosis and adequate treatment to avoid possible complications and improve the quality of life of these patients.
