Abstract

Dental caries is a microbial disease of the oral cavity and one of the main affections is in the first permanent molars, due to its anatomical structure and the age of eruption, so it is important to develop preventive measures. According to the World Health Organization, this type of disease is found in 60% to 90% of school children. The aim of this study was to interpret the risk factors for permanent first molar caries by means of a literature review. The study was framed in the exploratory research level, and was based on hermeneutics to interpret the literature review, which included 10 documents that met the search criteria. Among the results, it was highlighted that adolescents, as well as the female gender, present a higher incidence of caries. It was concluded that the quality of food is the main cause of caries in the first permanent molars, diets rich in carbohydrates, acids and sugars cause an increase in the bacterial flora accompanied by poor oral hygiene, resulting in the demineralization of the tooth, leaving it vulnerable to biofilm adherence and the onset of caries.
