Abstract

Objective: To validate an instrument designed to assess the competencies of undergraduate nursing interns during their social service placement.

Methods: Instrumental, non-experimental, cross-sectional, prospective, quantitative study. The instrument was initially constructed with 130 items in four dimensions. Content validity was assessed through three Delphi rounds with 10 experts. The resulting version was administered to 120 nursing interns. Internal consistency, factorability, and exploratory structure were assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure, Bartlett’s test of sphericity, and exploratory factor analysis with principal-components extraction and Varimax rotation. Competency levels were established using percentiles.

Results: The third Delphi round yielded 85 items, a content validity index of 0.92, and 98.6% expert acceptance. In the pilot test, KMO was 0.71 and Bartlett’s test was significant (p = 0.01). The exploratory analysis reduced the instrument to 60 items grouped into four dimensions. Total Cronbach’s alpha was 0.88 and the Shapiro-Wilk test showed p = 0.698. Five competency levels were established using cutoffs derived from the observed percentiles.

Conclusions: The EERIC instrument showed evidence of content validity, construct validity, and high internal consistency. It may be useful for assessing nursing interns’ competencies in clinical and educational social-service settings.
