Abstract

Introduction: Emergency care for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) poses unique challenges due to their sensory sensitivities and communication needs.

Objective: To evaluate strategies and adaptations in pediatric emergency care that improve the experience and outcomes in children with ASD.

Methods: Review of existing literature on non-pharmacological interventions, environmental adaptations and behavioral management strategies for children with ASD in emergency settings.

Development: The importance of sensory adaptations, such as quiet waiting areas, as well as the reduction of acute stimuli to minimize sensory overload is emphasized. Adapted communication strategies, such as the use of visual aids and a calm environment-oriented approach, are essential to mitigate anxiety.  Behavioral de-escalation, prioritizing noninvasive techniques over pharmacological methods or physical restraints, is effective in managing agitation.

Conclusions: Emergency departments should incorporate specific accommodations for children with ASD to improve medical care and reduce invasive interventions. Training staff to recognize the special needs of these patients and implementing adapted protocols are crucial to provide an environment that conveys safety and understanding.
