Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence emerges as a critical period for the development and prevention of emotional skills.
Objective:
The objective of the study was to relate emotional regulation strategies with attachment styles in university nursing students in the city of Ambato, Ecuador.
Methods:
This was a relational, prospective, observational, analytical and cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 135 university nursing students. Emotional regulation was assessed by means of the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, version adapted to Ecuador. Attachment style was assessed with the original Spanish reduced version of the Cartes questionnaire (Modéles Individuelles de relations).
Results:
Analyses showed that 54.8 % of the participants were between 21 and 23 years old, 81.5 % were single and 71.1 % did not use substances. Using Pearson and Spearman correlations, it was found that secure attachment was positively associated with cognitive reappraisal (r=0.409, p<0.01), while preoccupied and avoidant attachment were related to greater use of emotional suppression (r=0.405 and r=0.374, p<0.01 respectively). These results suggest that secure, preoccupied and avoidant attachment styles correlate significantly with the emotional regulation strategies of cognitive reappraisal and emotional suppression in college students.
Conclusions: At a 95 % confidence level, the results support that attachment styles are associated and correlated with the forms of emotional regulation employed by student participants in the study.
