Abstract

Introduction: It is essential to have an accurate assessment of adenoid hypertrophy in order to adequately direct the necessary treatment and medical care.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the degree of adenoid hypertrophy affectation according to sex.

Methods: The study was carried out in January 2023 and was observational, cross-sectional and retrospective. The study population consisted of 78 patients (39 males and 39 females). The U-Mann-Whitney statistical test was used with the aid of SPSS 26 statistical software.

Results: In the group of male patients, 12 cases (30.8 %) of mild hypertrophy, 19 cases (48.7 %) of moderate hypertrophy and 8 cases (20.5 %) of severe hypertrophy were observed. On the other hand, in the group of female patients, 13 cases (33.3 %) of mild hypertrophy, 21 cases (53.9 %) of moderate hypertrophy and 5 cases (12.8 %) of severe hypertrophy were found.

Conclusions: The results allowed us to state that with a probability of error of 53.8 % (P-value of 0.538), the degree of adenoid hypertrophy was different according to the sex of the patients. because of this high percentage of error, it was assumed that it was similar according to sex, i.e., there was no evidence to reject the null hypothesis (H0). With the data analyzed, it was not possible to demonstrate differences between the degree of adenoid hypertrophy involvement in the patients, according to sex.
