Abstract

Introduction: Cytologic testing is fundamental in the early detection of cervical cancer, which is one of the main causes of cancer in women worldwide.

Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the acceptance of cytology testing in students of the Medical School in Ecuador.

Methods: The study was experimental, longitudinal and prospective. The study population consisted of 204 medical students in Ecuador.  The intervention consisted of an educational talk followed by the projection of an informative video on the importance of cytological testing in the early detection of cervical cancer. The McNemar statistical test was applied using SPSS software.

Results: The results showed that before the intervention, 47.5 % of the students rejected the cytology test, while 52.5 % accepted it. After the intervention, there was a significant change in acceptance, the percentage of rejection was 17.2 % and the percentage of acceptance was 82.8 %. The results of McNemar's test revealed a high statistical significance, with a value of 0.000.

Conclusions: The findings supported the alternative hypothesis, which suggested a significant increase in the uptake of cytology testing after the intervention. The effectiveness of this intervention highlighted the importance of educational and awareness strategies in health promotion and cervical cancer prevention.
