Abstract

Introduction: Oral hygiene in the first dental pieces of infants is of vital importance in their lives since healthy dental pieces give way to a smooth speech activity in infants.
Objective: To analyze the factors that cause poor oral hygiene in the first teeth of infants, through a bibliographic review.
Methods: It was a study corresponding to the exploratory level, aided by hermeneutics to interpret the bibliographic review carried out. It was observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective. A total of 112 scientific articles were initially reviewed, which after purification were reduced to 60. The search was formalized in the database of PubMed.
Results: It was evidenced that incorrect breastfeeding habits, excessive use of bottles and pacifiers, transmission of bacteria, inadequate feeding and lack of parental control are the main counterproductive factors in the oral hygiene of the first teeth of infants.
Conclusions: The care of the first dental pieces in infants is of utmost importance, since this contributes to preventing future malformations in the oral cavity, and to the development of other more serious problems related to digestive and psychological issues, as well as diseases related to malocclusion, dental loss at an early age, gingivitis, caries, among others.
