Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects systemic health and increases the risk of oral complications such as periodontal disease and dental caries. Given the importance of proper oral health management in these patients, it is essential for dentists to have specific preventive protocols. The objective of this study is to analyze the oral prevention protocol used by dentists for diabetic patients in the city of Ibarra. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, using surveys administered to 30 dentists to collect data on the frequency of care provided to diabetic patients, the existence of specific protocols, and the preventive activities implemented. The results show that 85 % of the surveyed dentists follow a specific protocol, guided by international research, while 15 % do not have a defined protocol. Additionally, the most common preventive activities include regular dental cleanings and oral hygiene education, although only 8% use fluoride applications. A lack of standardization in care protocols was identified in the private sector, unlike in the public sector where these are more established. In conclusion, while the majority of dentists in Ibarra apply specific protocols, there is a need to unify and standardize these practices to improve the comprehensive care of diabetic patients, ensuring greater equity in care and facilitating the management of these oral complications.
