Abstract

The objective of the present study was to raise awareness among nursing professionals at the Hospital Provincial General IESS, Ambato, Ecuador, about the safest practices in the health care setting through the socialization of a guide, with the aim of reducing the clinical risk of adverse events during surgery in the operating room. The methodology of the study was analytical-synthetic, which allowed the development of a conceptual framework on the role of nursing in surgical patient safety. A survey was used to collect data on the perceptions and experiences of the nursing staff in the operating room. The results showed that 30 % considered fall prevention to be the most important safety practice, 25 % noted nosocomial infections as the most frequent adverse event, and 65.21 % highlighted the importance of being sensitive to patient needs and concerns. It was concluded that it is necessary to implement a nursing guide to promote patient safety and foster a culture of safety.
