Abstract

Introduction: Bariatric surgery in patients with autoimmune diseases presents unique challenges in terms of underlying disease management and perioperative treatment. Objective: The present study aimed to characterize bariatric surgery in patients with obesity and autoimmune diseases through the results obtained in a case study in Ecuador.

Methods: The research had a descriptive epidemiological design and consisted of the development of five clinical cases in which the inclusion criteria were assumed to be the presence of obesity and autoimmune diseases, which underwent bariatric surgery.

Results: A direct relationship between obesity and inflammatory response was evidenced, which had an effect that could be causal in nature, in addition it was observed through the cases presented as the mere fact of overcoming obesity through bariatric surgery was an evident therapeutic response, yielding for prolonged periods the activity of the inflammatory disease and allowing a mono pharmacological management of the same, allowing to suggest it as a therapeutic option to be taken into account early in patients with inflammatory pathology with poor response or risk factors in their first evaluations.

Conclusions: It was evidenced that lipoinflammation is not exclusive to morbid obesity, but is also an element of high relevance in patients with central obesity. The authors of this study, based on the results obtained in recent studies on bariatric surgery in patients with obesity and autoimmune diseases, suggest several areas for future studies.
