Abstract

Introduction: Patients with Down syndrome (DS) generally present anomalies in craniofacial morphology and oral cavity; the latter affects hard and soft structures, which causes the appearance of periodontal pathology.

Objective: The aim of the study was to interpret the dental management of periodontal disease and dental caries in patients with Down syndrome.

Methods: The study corresponded to the exploratory level and relied on hermeneutics to interpret the literature review carried out on DS, through the development of the PICO methodology. It was an observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective study.

Results: The main findings on dental management in periodontal disease and dental caries in patients with DS include the description of the high prevalence of these oral conditions in this population, the evaluation of the efficacy of different treatments such as chlorhexidine rinses and oral probiotics, the importance of early dental care and the need for comprehensive dental evaluation to detect and treat oral conditions early, and the use of digital tools to improve oral health and quality of life in patients with DS and periodontal disease.

Conclusions: We conclude that it is important to study dental management in periodontal disease and dental caries in patients with DS to ensure that these patients receive the appropriate and personalized dental care they need to maintain good oral health and prevent serious dental complications.
