Abstract

Introduction: The existence or not of mental health alterations in women because of abortion is currently a dilemma as there are professionals who support this theory and others who do not.
Objective: To determine the main psychological alterations in women with multiple abortions.
Methods: The study group consisted of 32 patients attended at this health center during the period July-December 2021. This qualitative study corresponded to the exploratory level, relying on heuristics as a problem-solving approach or method based on experience and practical judgment to find satisfactory solutions. The interview guide used was the one developed by Dr. David C. Reardon on Post-abortion Syndrome.
Results: The results suggested that the age ranges of 26-30 and 31-35 years predominated (50%); incomplete, delayed or missed miscarriage and induced miscarriage were the most frequent (53.1%, 25% and 15.6% respectively); the number of previous miscarriages accounted for 22% of the total number of cases. The main causes of abortion were miscellaneous accidents, urinary tract infection and unstable relationship. 81.3% presented Post-abortion Syndrome, related to: anxiety, depression, feelings of loss and emptiness, nightmares, fear, dread, crying and frequent anger.
Conclusions: The theoretical foundations of abortion, its causes and main psychological alterations were systematized.
