Abstract

Burn Care Medicine (Caumatology) is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the study, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of burns and their complications. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge in pediatric burn care (pediatric caumatology) among medical faculty within the Primary Health Care System in Ecuador, a critical aspect to ensure proper medical care for infants with burns. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted, involving a questionnaire administered to 137 medical faculty from various health centers nationwide. The questionnaire included questions on burn classification, the treatment of deep burns, and the management of associated complications, among other key topics. The results revealed that most of the faculty have limited knowledge in pediatric burn care; nearly 70 % were unable to correctly classify burns according to their extent and depth, and only 20 % correctly identified the most common burns in children. Additionally, more than 40 % were unaware of the scope and impact of each type of burn, and only 22 % knew how to act in cases of severe burns. These findings indicate a significant deficiency in the faculty's training in this area, highlighting the urgent need for specialized training programs in pediatric burn care. Strengthening this knowledge is essential to improving the quality of medical care in pediatric settings and preventing severe complications and long-term sequelae in affected patients.
