Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic generates considerable psychological stress in health professionals.
Objective:
The objective of the study was to compare work stress among nurses and physicians in the COVID-19 area in the hospital in Ecuador.
Methods:
The study was analytical, observational, prospective and cross-sectional, framed at the relational research level. The sample of this study comprised 30 nurses and 30 physicians from a hospital in the Ecuador. The chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used with the SPSS software version 27.
Results:
61.1 % of the nursing staff showed stress, while only 38.9 % of the physicians showed stress. The difference between the proportions was statistically significant according to the chi-square test (p<0.05). Pearson's chi-square test showed a statistically significant association between profession and presence of stress (X2=4.444, p=0.035). Both the likelihood ratio (p=0.034) and Fisher's exact test (p=0.032) confirmed this association.
Conclusions:
Significant differences are identified in stress levels between nurses and physicians in the hospital of Ecuador, so the researcher's hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected.
