Abstract

Periodontal assessment is a fundamental part of dental practice, crucial for the early detection and precise diagnosis of periodontal diseases. The objective of the study was to interpret periodontal assessment as the first step in dental practice through a literature review. This study was conducted through a narrative review, collecting and analyzing 15 scientific references. Search strategies included databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Various methodologies and diagnostic tools were evaluated, including the use of periodontal probes, radiographs, and cone-beam computed tomography. The critical parameters assessed were probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, and tooth mobility. The results highlight the importance of a thorough periodontal assessment to establish an accurate diagnosis, plan treatment, and monitor periodontal health in the long term. Key studies underscore the effectiveness of these diagnostic tools. Additionally, there is evidence of the relationship between periodontal health and systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The study concludes that periodontal assessment is indispensable for comprehensive and quality dental care. Professionals must stay updated with the latest techniques and advances in periodontal assessment, which will significantly improve the management of periodontal diseases and overall oral health. This multidisciplinary approach not only benefits oral health but also contributes to general health and patient well-being.
